Isle of Wight headteachers are praising the efforts of staff and students, as A Level results and other higher qualifications are handed out today (Tuesday).

Scores of Island students have battled school absence and remote learning, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to make it to results day.

Their efforts are winning praise from those who have supported them.

Cowes Enterprise College principal Rachel Kitley said: "I am incredibly proud of all our students for their hard work and dedication to their studies. They all deserve to be celebrated.

"Whether they are going to university, or to be part of a prestigious apprenticeship scheme, we are delighted that our students’ determination has been rewarded, and excited to see what the future holds for them all.

The Island VI Form head, Dave Mumford, said: “We have over 150 students going on from the Island to follow a vast range of university courses including mathematics, physics, chemistry, civil engineering, law and fashion, to name just a few.

“Many students have gained entry to top Russell Group universities across the country.

"Congratulations to all students on their achievements and I would like to thank parents and staff for all their support.”

Executive head for the IWEF group, which includes the Island VI Form, Matthew Parr-Burman, said: "I'm incredibly proud after what the students have been through.

"It's been one of toughest years anyone's had to cope with.

"I can't imagine how they've done it - massive respect to them!

"It will set them up for future as it doesn't get much tougher. They have the attributes of the ancient Spartans!"

Isle of Wight County Press:

Ryde School headmaster Mark Waldron, who is due to leave the school in 2022, told the County Press: "Results have been pretty good all round, which is really pleasing after the last two years.

"In some ways this group, although it's been a difficult two years, are going to university and the world of work in a stronger place, as so much has been thrown at them.

"It's shown the importance of community and how important school is for parents, pupils and staff."

At Ryde Academy, principal Joy Ballard said: “Congratulations to all of our students on their fantastic results. They should be rightly proud of these grades, which they have worked so very hard for.

"Our students have responded to the challenges of the past few months, with determination, compassion and patience. Whether they are going onto university, high-quality vocational courses, or employment, I am confident that they will continue to make us proud."
