Ventnor's Cascades road, officially known as Shore Hill, has been closed to traffic.

It comes after a crack appeared in the road earlier today (Monday) following a deluge of torrential rain.

Shore Hill is closed, from its junction with Pier Street.

Island Roads told the County Press: "Shore Hill is now closed for assessments, investigation and repairs.

"We are currently considering alternative traffic arrangements, given traffic restrictions in place at the other end of the Esplande/Bath Road.

"These arrangements will be communicated when agreed."

Earlier, water was filmed cascading down the steep road to the Esplanade and the amount of rain lifted a manhole cover.

Initially, temporary lights were put in place, but Shore Hill has now been closed to traffic.

Speaking to the County Press, a spokesperson for Island Roads who is at the location said: "Safety is paramount and we've got the right people on site working on this.

"Our main priority is to make the area safe before we allow businesses (or other vehicles) to access the road."

Further along the coast, land slipped at Wheelers Bay, between Ventnor and Bonchurch, damaging a boat and engines.
