Prince Michael of Kent made a two-day visit to the Isle of Wight last week.

He was accompanied by IW Lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon on the visit.

At the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Prince Michael enjoyed a round trip, travelling first class in a rebuild of an 1864 Oldbury Coach.

He unveiled a 50th anniversary memorial plaque in the Havenstreet station yard, which paid tribute to all those who contributed towards the success of the railway over the last 50 years.

The prince was then taken on a tour of the Train Story Museum.

The following day, he visited Sandown seafront to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the war memorial.

Sandown and Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat provided a guard of honour on his arrival and pupils from Sandown CE Primary School presented the prince with a personally designed mug.

The prince then went to the Broadway Centre where he presented the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services to the Isle of Wight Bus Partnership.

The award was received on behalf of the volunteers by Alan Stott and the citation was read by Dr Nicholas England DL.

After the presentation His Royal Highness met volunteer drivers and regular users of the bus service.
