THERE are two areas of flood concern on the Isle of Wight, following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms last night.

The area of St Johns, Ryde has been issued with a "Flooding is possible - be prepared" warning, with the water level in the Monktonmead Brook high and rising.

At 5.17am, the flood alert said more intense rain had fallen with nearly 30mm in the previous four hours, which is about half a month’s total.

It said water will begin to flow across the railway tracks, upstream of St Johns Station. Surface water may already be causing impacts as drains become overloaded. Property flooding is not currently expected at this time but will be kept under review.

Further thundery showers are still possible over the next 24 hours.

People are asked to consider moving vehicles from depots located next to the river and railway line.

There is also a warning in place about the water level in the Eastern Yar, which remains very high, but at Alverstone, it is now slowly falling.

Water levels will remain very high and flooding of gardens, access and cycle tracks will continue. Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road will experience minor impact flooding. Ditches at Fort Holiday Park may also struggle to drain.

For the rest of this week, the risk of further fast-moving, heavy and scattered showers continues.

The river will be incredibly sensitive to any further rainfall and the area is being monitored closely.

Both flood alerts will be updated by 11am today (Tuesday) or sooner if the situation changes.
