THE Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) has urged Island residents to stay safe following a weekend of heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.

Following a flood warning, the Fire Service has asked those living in the Monktonmead Brook area to be aware of the Environment Agency's updates, as reported by the County Press earlier this evening (Sunday).

HIWFRS issued a statement on social media, which said: "If you require sandbags, please contact the Isle of Wight council for assistance.

"A big thank you to the public for pulling together and looking out for one another during these difficult times.

"The Environment Agency and local authority have implemented their well-tested flood response plans to tackle the flooding which is expected to subside over the coming hours.

"HIWFRS (has) received an extremely high volume of calls following the flash floods on the Isle of Wight this afternoon."

Assistant Director of Operations Dan Tasker added: "Fortunately, we have not been required to respond to any incidents involving lives at risk."

Isle of Wight Police issued a similar message this evening, having received multiple reports of issues caused by the flooding.

It said: "If you are out and about please be careful - due to the sudden deluge of rain, We are receiving numerous reports of lifted inspection covers and flooding."
