ACROSS the summer, you are invited to walk 70 miles in memory of beloved Isle of Wight couple, Rosemary and Ray Scovell.

The pair died within days of each other back in February after contracting Covid-19.

Their golden wedding anniversary had been due the weekend after Rosemary died, where the pair would have celebrated 50 years together.

Tributes were paid to the two key figures in Island athletics.

Close friend, Karen Eeles, has organised a round the Island memorial walk — to raise funds for the Ray and Rose Scovell Trust.

"Their daughter, Claire, wanted to remember them, and to celebrate all they did for the Island — Ray with his athletics and Rose with her love of theatre," said Karen.

"So the Ray and Rose Scovell Trust was founded to support young people on the Island through sport and theatre.

"Claire is walking around the Island to raise money in their memory.

"Now I’m a lot older and a lot less fit, but I can walk. My job for the last few months has been coordinating the Covid vaccine centre volunteers at Westridge and Riverside, which involves a lot of walking, mostly around car parks.

"My challenge is to walk 70 miles — the distance around the Island — by walking around those car parks, clocking up approximately 4k a day, sometimes more."

You help Karen and support the Ray and Rose Scovell Trust, either by walking your own 70 miles, or by sponsoring Karen through her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com

If you plan to walk yourself, you can email therayandrosescovelltrust@hotmail.com

"Every penny raised will support young people on the Island, and you will keep a wonderful couple's memory alive," said Karen.
