Cowes Week is going back to its roots this year, which a focus on events on the water.

Although there will not be a fireworks display, or a visit from aerial display team the Red Arrows, visitors to the historic regatta are promised plenty of shore-side sailing action.

There are already five hundred entries, with more coming in.

Regatta director Laurence Mead told the County Press: "We'll have lots of spectator action.

"We've moved the startline back to the Royal Yacht Squadron castle.

"Come and sit on the green and watch the sailing!"

Competing classes of boats will set off every five minutes, between 10.30am and 12.30pm every day.

There will be things to enjoy onshore too, although attractions this year will be smaller and quieter than in recent years.

A daytime village will be set up on Cowes Parade.

The car park there closes on Monday 26, July for a fortnight, to make space for stalls and spectators.

There are stages too, with mainly acoustic music in Cowes Yacht Haven and host of Isle of Wight bands on the Parade.

Entertainment starts on Friday, July 30, with a opening night party courtesy of 30Ten.

Derek Sandy, Beth Berry, Lucid and JC Grimshaw will be among the familiar names taking a turn.

Blonde Bombshell perform on Cowes Parade to close the week in style, on Friday, August 6.

Elsewhere, Northwood House will host a Tea Garden, with cakes, scones and sandwiches among its offerings.

The Lawn Lounge and Gin Festival will boast around 100 tipples to try.

Sunday August 1 is Family Pirate Day.

Food will also be available, courtesy of a small food court on Cowes Parade.

Parking will be available at Northwood House, while key information will be on an app - familiar to sailors, but news for those without their sea legs.
