The annual Solent Swim is taking place today (Sunday).

Organised by the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, swimmers cross 1.2 miles, from Hurst Castle, near Lymington, to Colwell Bay.

Earlier, Friends of Freshwater Fire Station tweeted pictures of kayakers gathering to act as safety support for those taking part.

The challenge had been expected to take place on July 4, but was cancelled because of the weather.

The swim is the biggest fundraiser for the charity and has raised more than £200,000 since it started in 2011.

Freshwater Lifeboat is also on had to support the swimmers today.

This is was expected to have the largest-ever group of swimmers involved and planning for the event takes a year.
