THE ever-popular Round the Island yacht race celebrated its 90th anniversary last weekend and it was the perfect opportunity for members of the Isle of Wight County Press Camera Club to take some stunning pictures.

The race on Saturday attracted yachts of all sizes, who raced round the coastline and came close to shore in many places, where spectators gathered to take photos and see them pass by.

There are always plenty of places to see them pass and popular viewing spots this year included Cowes, Ryde, Culver Cliff, Ventnor, Niton and The Needles.

Nearly 1,200 boats took part in the race and one of its unique attractions is its even-handedness and the opportunity for Olympic and world champion sailors to compete on the same racecourse with amateurs, families and club sailors of all ages.

Ryde-based club member Richard Lashley even made a YouTube film of his efforts to capture this year’s race.

Our Camera Club has almost 1,200 members, who regularly share their photos in the club’s Facebook group — and we publish many of their images in the newspaper, within our sister publication, Isle of Wight Living magazine, and online via our website.

Members of our Camera Club also often take part in our Behind the Lens features in the newspaper and online.
