Ryde School with Upper Chine has appointed William Turner as its next Head and he is due to start in September 2022.

He and his family will move to the Isle of Wight to join the private school from Duino, which is near Trieste in Italy.

Mr Turner is Head of UWC Adriatic, an integral member of the United World Colleges movement.

He holds a degree in French and Italian from the University of Exeter and spent a year studying at the Università degli Studi di Pisa.

He has taught at Sherborne School, Dorset, Harrow School and St John's School, Leatherhead.

He has also been a school inspector and a governor of a preparatory school.

Mr Turner is a keen cricketer and has played for the MCC, including against Ryde School.

His wife and daughter will also make the move to the Isle of Wight and Mr Turner will work closely with outgoing Head Master, Mark Waldron over the next year, before Mr Waldron steps down.

William Turner said: "I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Head of Ryde School with Upper Chine.

"When I visited Ryde it was clear that it is an excellent school with a strong sense of community.

"Mark Waldron has made an enormous contribution in developing the school in his time as Head, and it will be exciting to work with pupils, staff, parents and governors to build upon his successes and to lead the school through the next chapter of its history.

"My family and I look forward to moving to Ryde in the summer of 2022 to begin island life."

The current Ryde School Head Master said he is delighted by the appointment.

William Turner was a former pupil, when Mark Waldron taught at The Leys in Cambridge.

Mr Waldron said it had been a privilege to see a bright and talented student develop into a principled and effective educational leader.

Mark Waldron, meanwhile, will take up a new job as director of an international school in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

The British School in Rio is described as one of the leading schools in South America.

Mr Waldron has been at Ryde School with Upper Chine for eight years, succeeding Dr Nicholas England.

Commenting on Mr Turner's appointment, Chantal-Aimée Doerries QC, Chair of the Selection Committee said: "The field of applicants was exceptionally strong, including a number of serving heads.

"After a rigorous selection process, the Board unanimously endorsed the selection committee’s recommendation.

"I am excited about Will joining the community that is Ryde and building on the work of the current Head.”

The appointment comes in the school’s centenary year and as two new HSBC-funded boarding houses are opened.
