A FATHER-TO-BE caught behind the wheel with cocaine in his system has been sentenced.

Joshua Andrew Nicholas Barnes, of Church View, Cowes, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The 21-year-old admitted possession of cannabis and driving under the influence of cocaine, on New Year's Eve, last year.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, said police had been called to Cineworld car park in Newport.

A strong smell of cannabis had been reported, and a search of Barnes' vehicle was conducted, involving a police dog.

A small bag of cannabis was found, and a drug-wipe saw Barnes test positive for Benzoylecgonine — a derivative of cocaine.

In police interview, he told officers the cannabis was for personal use. Ms Miller said he had no previous convictions.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Barnes was fully co-operative with police.

He said the cocaine found in his system took him by surprise, because he had not taken cocaine that day.

Mr Vincent said the substances had been consumed over the festive period and Barnes had not offended since.

The court heard he was living a more responsible lifestyle and expecting his first child.

Barnes was fined £166 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
