FIFEFIGHTING colleagues on the Isle of Wight have been paying tribute to decorated firefighting colleague Steve Apter who has retired from the service after more than three decades.

The former deputy chief fire officer (DCFO), who was recognised for his work with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list, awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal, began his fire service career as a retained firefighter on the Isle of Wight in 1990.

During his service, Steve led the former Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service through significant improvement and change and, as Deputy Commissioner for London Fire Brigade, attended many significant incidents, including the Westminster Bridge terrorist attack and Grenfell Tower fire.

He was also been responsible for overseeing the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Services merge into one organisation.

Steve, who began his career as a retained firefighter at Shanklin, was presented with a special retirement gift at the station, attended by a full complement of staff, last week.

A Shanklin Fire Station spokesman said: "Thank you Steve. You’ve been a truly inspirational leader and chief fire officer to us — making others better as a result of his presence.

"We were honoured to say a fond farewell to Steve, presenting him with a parting gift as a token of our appreciation on his retirement, from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service."

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: "Good luck with your next step Steve. Well done for all you have achieved during your fantastic career."

Leon Marshall, of Blue Watch, Ryde, said: "Thanks for everything Steve. You’re a very well respected and inspirational officer. I’m sure many will be sad to see you leave the service. Enjoy your retirement."

Steve said: "After over 31 years, my time in the fire rescue service has ended. I’ve had the best time, lucky to work with the best and loved it.

"Thanks for a great send-off and for one last time on the trucks! To everyone I’ve worked with, I love you all."

Steve's final role as DCFO was to present firefighters Mark Grimes and Rob Hunnybun Long Service and Good Conduct (LSGC) medals.

With the awards ceremony being delayed over the last year, both Mark and Rob personally requested their medals be presented by Steve, having played a major role in their service.
