Bad weather has caused more delay to the major ongoing roadworks on York Avenue in East Cowes.

The Island Roads project was originally supposed to have been finished on June 9.

Then a new date (June 17) was planned for the start of the resurfacing work - with a completion date of June 24.

Since then, heavy rain has prevented the overnight work from being carried out.

Now, although Island Roads says it will finish the first part of the resurfacing tomorrow (June 23), it will still need three more working nights to complete the job and to reopen the road to Red Funnel ferry, Waitrose, GKN, Floating Bridge and local traffic.

The project has been running since March and has required the complete closure of the main road into East Cowes.

Isle of Wight County Press:

The second water leak on Clarence Road yesterday (Monday).

A diversion route is in place and residents have reported shaking houses, HGVs and artic lorries mounting pavements outside their homes and damage to smaller, residential streets.

On Friday, a burst water main on the route combined with cancelled ferries to cause gridlock in the town, with drivers stuck for hours in a temporary one-way system.

There has been significant rainfall in recent days which has now pushed resurfacing back further.

Island Roads said, of the latest delay, "We share your frustration at this delay, but it is simply not prudent to lay hot materials during rainy weather as wet conditions can compromise the performance of the surfacing material."

Meanwhile, the County Press is still waiting to find out if a second water leak on Clarence Road - yards from the first - will need to be fixed.
