RYDE Town Council is among those celebrating the centenary of one of the Island's most beloved imports.

Edward Minghella, founder of the world-renowned Minghella ice-cream, celebrates his 100th birthday today (Monday).

Over the last eight decades living on the Island, he has worked for countless charities and promoted civic causes.

Even on his birthday, he is still thinking of others, and is asking for donations in lieu of gifts.

He has set up a Justgiving page, fundraising for Save the Children.

After marrying a girl in Ryde, Edward began working in the family's cafe and invested his demob pay to create a small ice cream factory in the back.

His ice cream became legendary on the Island, and later across the country.

"Today, we celebrate Eddie Minghella," said a spokesperson for the town council.

"Eddie’s dedication and involvement in a variety of charity work and civic causes was recognised by Ryde Town Council by awarding Edward the title of Freeman of Ryde.

"This means Eddie has the right to drove sheep up the High Street — wouldn’t that be something to see?

"Eddie is a warm and kind man, and even on this birthday, he is still thinking of others and what he can give back.

"Eddie has set-up a Justgiving Page fundraising for Save the Children, for anyone wishing to donate.

"Donations are in lieu of gifts."
