It looks like flytipped rubbish could finally be moved from the Whale Chine beauty spot, on the Isle of Wight's south coast, almost a year since it was first dumped there.

The Isle of Wight County Press reported on the problem in February, after concerns were raised by a walker.

Garden waste made up much of what was left there, discovered by Islander Lisa Davis who took photos.

She also found mattresses, piping, plastic and clay plant balls and said rubbish was thrown "over the hedgerow and down into the Chine itself - from the very top to the very bottom."

It then emerged similar items had been spotted - and reported - as early as August 2020.

In March, the Isle of Wight Council called it 'disgraceful' and 'unacceptable.'

It said talks had started with the private landowner to move the waste from the site off Military Road.

Island Roads visited earlier this year to clear rubbish from the adjacent car park, but it is not allowed to move other waste.

Amey has also been to see the problem first hand.

When the County Press visited last week, the large items remained in the chine.

The paper has now been told that a working party has been set up by Chale Parish Council, including former leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Dave Stewart.

Isle of Wight Council's new vice chair is the Green Party's Cllr Claire Critchison, who now represents Chale, Niton and Whitwell.

Cllr Critchison is awaiting a date for the waste in the chine to be moved up to the car park, by the landowner and the working group, from where it will be collected by Island Roads.

She told the County Press: "Cllr Stewart is working on getting the waste removed through Chale Parish Council.

"Once we've got a date on that, we are back on it - hopefully it will be quickly.

"Island Roads will then bring a vehicle to Whale Chine to clear it all up so it isn't left sitting there."
