A VENTNOR man who sent abusive text messages to his girlfriend and threw her phone across a room has been sentenced.

John Henry Jenkins, of Hazel Close, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last Monday (June 7).

The 63-year-old admitted criminal damage to a mobile phone, and sending texts conveying a threat, on March 24.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court the charges related to a domestic incident, and Jenkins and his victim were in an on-off relationship characterised by excessive alcohol consumption.

She said Jenkins sent the victim abusive text messages, and following an argument at her home, took her phone and threw it across a room.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said the victim invited Jenkins to her house, and on arrival an argument ensued.

Mr Vincent said both parties were very drunk when officers attended.

Jenkins was given a 12-month community order, to include 15 rehabilitation days.

He was fined £40 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £95 surcharge.
