A BURST water pipe has lead to a paddling pool in East Cowes being closed to the public today (Tuesday).

East Cowes Town Council has now released a statement expressing its regret at the closure.

The council said: "There have been several reports that children using the pool have had blue paint adhering to their skin or clothing.

"The Town Council apologises for this but wishes to reassure everyone affected the paint is in no way harmful and can be removed using soap and water and an exfoliating glove.

"The Council has received reports youngsters were seen riding bicycles in the pool on Friday evening, and CCTV is being checked, as this could well have damaged the surface and allowed water to seep under the paint surface.

"The cause of the paint lifting is being investigated by the Council and this will mean the pool will be closed immediately to allow it to be drained. At the same time, we will be working on the leaking pipework.

"We realise how disappointing this will be to everyone, but we take our responsibilities to the community seriously and will always act in their best interests."

East Cowes Town Council says it is hopeful the pool will reopen in time for the summer holidays.
