AN ISLE of Wight Cricket League match has been called off after a young player tested positive for Covid-19.

The Division 2 match between Ventnor II and Ryde III at Steephill was called off last night (Friday) after one of the Ryde's under-15 players was suspected of having coronavirus.

Stuart Chatfield, of the Isle of Wight Cricket Board, confirmed there had been a Covid-19 case among one of Ryde's youth players and cancelled the match as a precaution.

He said: "One of the Ryde lads had a lateral flow test and that came back positive this morning (Saturday).

"We made the decision last night not to play the game. I believe he is one of the under-15s.

"We decided to call it off just to err on the side of caution. We have plenty of time to replay the game."

Ryde spokesman, Simon Wratten, confirmed it was one of Ryde's colts squad and that one of the boys in the squad had been watching a game, but had not played.  

Graeme Burnett, of Ventnor Cricket Club, said: "Ryde informed us yesterday about concerns they had about a mid-week game they had."

The game has been rearranged for August 21.
