A 'no waiting at any time' restriction is to come into force at the junction of Clarence Road and Yarborough Road in East Cowes, to help with the flow of HGV vehicles and buses along the diversion route.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the temporary traffic lights in York Avenue will be manually operated at peak times.

Phases three and four of work to upgrade York Avenue is underway, which means the main road into the town, including to Red Funnel, Waitrose, GKN and the Floating Bridge, is closed.

Island Roads, which is carrying out the work, said: "The scheme has been a challenging one, primarily due to the clayrich conditions.

"This has meant that we have had to excavate to a full depth in every section.

"In addition, we have encountered many utility services – some unmapped – which we have had to excavate around by hand in many cases."

Isle of Wight County Press:

The work is delayed by a number of weeks, with resurfacing now due to take place between June 17 and 24.

In a weekly update to residents, Island Roads said a qualified highways safety engineer had conducted a full site audit and found it to be safe and fully compliant with network safety regulations.

Additional signage at the Ferry Road and York Avenue crossing has been added, however.

Island Roads said: "We do appreciate that a road improvement scheme of this scale and complexity does cause some inconvenience.

"We continue to monitor the situation and are in regular dialogue with elected representatives and other stakeholders to ensure the arrangements are as safe and effective as possible."

"We wish to extend our appreciation for your understanding, patience, and cooperation during these essential highways works."
