FIRE crews were sent to a fire at a derelict property in Newport this morning (Saturday).

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent out an appliance from Newport and Cowes to the house in Albany Road at 9.30am.

Someone working at the house had inadvertently set fire to the damp course with a heat torch, acording to a fire spokeswoman.

However, the small fire was out on the crews' arrival. Firefighters used a bucket of water to damp the affected area down.

The crews returned to their stations at 9.52am.
