A SEARCH for an unaccounted-for kitesurfer was unsuccessful overnight.

Multiple search teams, including Bembridge RNLI, were involved in the mission, near Hayling Island.

From the Island, RNLB Alfred Albert Williams (Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat 16-17) was launched at 9.40pm last night (Saturday) at the request of HM Coastguard to help search.

They worked in conjunction with Hayling Coastguard Rescue Team, Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team, Hayling Island RNLI's B-Class and D-Class lifeboats and two Coastguard helicopters (Rescue 163 and Rescue 175).

With no sign of a casualty, the search was reduced and the Bembridge crew was released at 00.15am.

More to follow.

UPDATE: A spokesperson from HM Coastguard said: "We received a call from a member of the public just before 8pm yesterday saying there might be a kite surfer in difficulty off Hayling Island.

"After a thorough search there was nothing to suggest the person was still in difficulty and the search was stood down.

"The person who called us did exactly the right thing, we would much rather be called than not. If you think you see someone in difficulty along the coast or at sea don’t hesitate in calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard."
