A RESIDENT at a West Wight sheltered home has celebrated a landmark occasion — her 100th birthday.

Doreen Gourlay celebrated her centenary with staff and residents at Abbeyfield West Wight Society, based in Totland.

On April 28, Abbeyfield occupants enjoyed a party — more modest than they would have wanted, on account of Covid-19.

It was all the more special, as the occasion marked Abbeyfield's first 100th birthday since its inception.

Doreen received her card from the Queen, and a beautiful birthday cake was baked by staff member, Samantha Dafter.

"It was not the party we wanted due to the pandemic, but it was an enjoyable day," said house manager, Julie Bellamy.

"Doreen is always happy, and we always have a laugh with her at Abbeyfield. She is a joy to look after."

Doreen was born in Devonport in Plymouth, and schooled at Catterick in Yorkshire.

As a child, Doreen and her three sisters would take it in turns looking after their younger brother.

She later moved to London, where she worked in an office in Selfridges.

Doreen married her husband in Richmond, Yorkshire, and has one son — Richard — who was born in Coventry.

Richard said his mother always recalled one particular occasion, when the family lived on a hill. He said she put him outside in his pram, and when she turned back, the pram was nowhere to be seen.

Doreen said the secret to reaching 100 is being happy and always looking forward.
