ISLE of Wight Police have vowed to crackdown on drink and drug driving after a wave of incidents over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Sgt Radford warned on Facebook: "My team will be stepping up stopping vehicles during our shifts over the next few days."

It comes after at least five incidents of drink/drug driving within a few hours, since Friday afternoon.

Sgt Radford said: "I’m not quite sure what is going on but something needs to change.

"If you are going to drink, pre-plan your night and have a lift/taxi/bus organised.

"If you are going to take drugs, the simple answer is don’t. Stay in your own home away from anyone else."

On Friday, a man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs after he crashed into a wall at Terrace Road, Newport.

Another incident was at East Hill Road, where a two-car collision occurred and a man was arrested.

Sgt Radford said afterwards: "It amazes me every time I go to an accident like this that no one was killed."
