A WOMAN who suffered head and suspected spinal injuries was taken to an Isle of Wight hospital following a boating accident on the River Medina.

At 1.45pm this afternoon (Saturday), Solent Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public about a 25-year-old woman in need of medical attention, at a floating pontoon, at Kingston Marine.

The Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Cowes RNLI lifeboat were sent, alongside the Isle of Wight police, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

A spokesman for Cowes RNLI said: "The woman had been in a dinghy and had suffered a double head injury. She had fallen backwards and struck her head and suffered a possible spinal injury as a result.

"To compound it, she suffered a second head injury when she was struck by a boom, which had knocked her unconscious for about 30 seconds.

"The woman was a learner in boats who may also have suffered a pelvic injury."

The crew transferred the woman to Kingston pontoon where she was met by paramedics from St Mary's Hospital, Newport.

Two ambulances had also attended — one of which took her to hospital, at around 3.30pm.

Police were on the scene because they had received a report of 'a concern for safety'.

Hampshire Police said: "A woman was located and taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment. The incident is being treated as an accident and is not under investigation."
