THE weather may have been a tad chilly for the Island’s first outdoor live music event since we began easing our way out of a third lockdown, but it could not disguise the warm atmosphere it generated.

The Traveller’s Joy public house in Northwood took the plunge to host what turned out to be a fine afternoon of live folk music on Thursday last week.

More than 20 members of the Traveller’s Joy Folk Club took over the pub’s spacious garden to perform a selection of their favourite songs and poems.

The entertainment ranged from traditional, dialect and comedy to music hall and modern — played on various instruments, such as melodion, flute, violin, mandolin and guitar.

The gig also featured one topical ditty, with one of the longest titles ever composed by an Island musician, entitled I Want to Find Heaven ‘Cos I’ve Been Through Hell, But My Camper Van’s Stuck in the Suez Canal!

During lockdown, many of the Island’s folk community have been able to meet regularly at several Zoom folk sessions, which take place every week, but for them there is nothing like performing to a live audience.

So it proved last summer hen the pubs re-opened after the first lockdown, when the folk club started performing afternoon open air sessions.

They have become so popular, they even performed one on Christmas Eve.

One club performer remarked: “The Traveller’s Joy is an ideal venue.

“The tables are all properly distanced, the stage area is well away from the audience and there is no background noise.

“I have been really looking forward to the club being able to start up again.”
