A LARGE number of emergency services personnel are currently attending an incident in Sandown.

Armed police, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service are all in the town, around the Fort Street, Victoria Road, Avenue Road and High Street areas.

Avenue Road has been cordoned off by police, at the point it meets Fort Street.

There are in excess of ten emergency vehicles present, including three fire engines, a command unit, at least seven police vehicles, plus attendance from the ambulance service.

The fire service were called to assist police at 3.27pm and dealt with a fire at a property in Avenue Road initially.

They have sent an officer, plus crews from Shanklin, Ryde and Newport.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are on scene dealing with a concern for welfare at an address on Avenue Road, Sandown.

"When officers attended a man refused to come out of the address, and made threats if officers enter the address.

"There were also reports of a small fire within the property.

"Officers are on scene with our colleagues from the ambulance and fire services."

An ambulance and a fire and rescue command unit is parked in the nearby Caulkheads car park.
