SCALLYWAGS Fun Club, one of the first out-of-school clubs on the Isle of Wight, has celebrated its 25th birthday.

Just as remarkably, Sarah Wherry and Kerry Anderson have both been working at the club since its inception.

Born on the Island, Sarah finished school, went to college and became a teaching assistant in the 1990s at the old site of Broadlea Primary School, Berry Hill, Lake.

She was then given the opportunity by headteacher, Mark Lee, to open what at the time was one of the first out-of-school clubs on the Island.

The club opened its doors for the very first time on April 6, 1996. Sarah set it up and the children named it Scallywags.

“We’ve been operating for 25 years, offering after-school and holiday care to all children all over the Island,” said Sarah.

“Many thanks to everyone involved – the children, staff, parents, grandparents, and anyone else who has played a part in Scallywags’ journey.

“Generations on, children and staff who attended Scallywags years ago are now bringing their own children for childcare and fun at the club.”
