It made a one and a half hour crossing from Lee-on-the-Solent, eventually landing at Medham, near Cowes.

Its cruise, at around 2,500 feet, caused a stir.

It was spotted on both sides of the coastline, including by Islanders in Cowes, East Cowes, Wootton, Ryde and Newport.

Operated by marketing team Bloon, the balloon has previously been on the Island for the Sky High event at Robin Hill and hopes to return over the May bank holiday weekend.

It is actually a giant replica of the logo for Sports Nutrition Brand Grenade.

Adam Faulkner from Bloon told the Isle of Wight County Press: "It's a giant hand grenade. It does cause a bit of a stir.

"I've been coming to Island for twenty years and I've always wanted to fly across from the mainland.

"I was trying to aim further than Medham, but we stopped and decided to put it on the ground.

"This was a practice because we want to bring 15 balloons across the Solent later this year."

The balloon was spotted by those on board speedboats in The Solent as it flew over, as well as by a host of Isle of Wight residents.
