AN ISLE of Wight woman sucked into a life of serial shoplifting, faced Island magistrates yet again after she stole a vacuum cleaner — the day after a period of probation had elapsed.

Koreen Donna Turley admitted the theft of the appliance from B&M Bargains, Newport, on February 18.

Turley, of Portland Street, Newport, was caught on the store's CCTV selecting the item and leaving the premises without paying.

Although she was not stopped at the time of the theft, she was easily identified and later arrested, said Ann Smout, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

The offence took place the day after she had served a probation order for shoplifting in June last year, the bench was told.

Turley, 36, has a number of previous convictions to her name, the last being two shoplifting offences in September last year.

"It is fair to say she is a regular shoplifter," Mrs Smout added.

For Turley, in mitigation, Oscar Vincent said: "She had no money, was in low mood and made a stupid, impulsive decision.

Mr Vincent said his client, a recovering addict, was addressing drug misuse and mental health issues and that the theft was "a brief relapse".

Turley was handed a further six months' probation, to include up to six rehabilitation activity sessions, and pay the store £89 compensation for the stolen vacuum cleaner, which was never recovered.

When sentencing Turley, presiding magistrate Paul Gane said: "To reoffend a day after your probation had ended was not wise."

He also warned Turley to comply with the probation order.
