AN OUT of control bonfire spread to a hedge on Uplands Road in Totland this afternoon.

Freshwater Fire Station sent a crew and a water carrier along at 1.48pm.

They found a hedgerow fire caused by a domestic bonfire.

A spokesperson said: "On this occasion the householders did have a hose laid out as a sensible precaution, however the fire spread quickly in the wind and was eventually extinguished by firefighters using two main jets, supplemented by the water carrier.

"A wooden outbuilding was saved from serious damage in the process with only superficial exterior scorching."

The stop message came in at 2.30pm.
