FIREFIGHTERS have urged people not to leave discarded barbecues behind if they are eating in the open.

A crew from Freshwater Fire Station had to attend a fire in woodland between Lanes End and Hurst Point View — caused by a discarded barbecue.

A spokesperson said: "A discarded barbecue which was still burning was the cause, with rubbish and alcohol debris also left behind.

"Please do refrain from lighting fires of any kind in our beautiful countryside and please take your rubbish away with you.

"In dry weather with a bit of a breeze like today (Monday) this could easily have spread, destroying the countryside, wildlife, livestock and homes.

"Please look after our beautiful Island."
