Coastguard teams are on the cliffs between Compton and Freshwater undertaking a search of the area.
Military Road has been closed while the teams investigate the situation further.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "A 999 call was received just after 7pm reporting a concern for welfare at Freshwater.
"The Coastguard Rescue Teams from Needles and Ventnor and officers from Hampshire Constabulary are currently carrying out a search of the area.
"The search is ongoing."

UPDATE 11.30pm: Teams have now stood down and the road has re-opened, following a wide search of land and sea and nothing found. A report had been lodged that a car could have gone over the cliff, but the call was later deemed false alarm with good intent.
