A fundraiser to honour Islander Steve Compton and thank the St Mary's Hospital NHS workers who cared for him, has already nearly doubled its GoFundMe target.

Bike hire firm owner Steve Compton spent the last 21 days of his life in the intensive care unit at the Isle of Wight's hospital.

Steve ran Shanklin's Routefifty7.

Daughter Heather Compton set up the GoFundMe page in his memory and has raised nearly £2,000.

She said: "The care team on the ward built a friendship and delivered care and hope.

"They afforded precious time with dad, in his final days.

"The intensity of care required and the physical and mental pressure on the staff is beyond words.

"They truly are angels and have continued to support the family."

Steve's daughter Claire told the County Press the aim was to show appreciation for the ICU team at St Mary's.

Donations will buy gift vouchers, so frontline ICU staff can enjoy 'the smallest token of our eternal gratitude for the care they provided.'
