BILLED as the Island's oldest attraction, the enchanting Shanklin Chine is re-opening for the 2021 season after Covid lockdown.

It will open the gates on April 12, and close again on Sunday, November 7.

The Chine, now a registered charity, opens daily from 10am to 10pm, with illuminations switched on daily at dusk.

The affiliated Fisherman’s Cottage Inn, on the beach nearby, will open the outside seating area (in accordance with Government guidelines) from April 12.

There will be a limited menu on offer and the pub will operate a pre-booked table service only. It will open fully from May 17.

Anne Springman, chine trustee, said “We are really looking forward to welcoming everybody back to our beautiful, historic chine.

"We have introduced a number of measures to ensure the chine is Covid-secure, including a one way system.

“We have also built a new external box office for visitor enquiries and everything that has been done has been completed as sympathetically as possible so the experience will be as enchanting as ever.

"We are making sure the chine’s natural beauty still shines through and visitors have an enjoyable and safe visit.”

Jo Porter, operations manager of the chine and Fisherman’s Cottage Inn said: "We’re also looking forward to opening a new addition to the pub’s offering in 2021, our hut.

"Customers will be able to pick up takeaway drinks, settle on the beach outside the pub and enjoy the views and open spaces.”

Shanklin Chine first opened to the public in 1817 and has long been a source of inspiration for many famous artists, writers and poets.
