AS THE country starts to open up, Covid-19 tests will now be available for everyone on the Isle of Wight aged 16 and over.

From Monday (March 29) people will be able to order the lateral flow tests, to be taken twice a week, in an attempt to stop the further spread of the virus.

Part of the government's roadmap out of lockdown will, from Monday, allow two households and up to six people to meet outdoors, at a safe distance,

One in three people have contracted the virus but show no symptom's and are still at risk of passing it on to others.

The Island's public health director, Simon Bryant has said all the small actions we take can make a big difference to keep the Island safe.

He said: "Tests are now available for everyone without COVID-19 symptoms.

"Whether you're getting ready for the start of the tourism season, opening up your shop for the first time since January or you've been vaccinated and are looking forward to meeting your family outside, pick up your test kits and get tested.

"Give yourself peace of mind and help keep our Island safe."

Community testing sites, in Ryde, Sandown, Newport, Yarmouth and Cowes, as well as the testing centre at Newclose County Cricket Ground will distribute the free tests.

If you prefer, you can take the tests at the community testing site. For more information, including opening times, visit keeptheislandsafe.org/communitytesting

The lateral flow testing has recently been rolled out in secondary schools.

The Isle of Wight Council's chief executive, John Metcalfe, the council's chief, said regular testing for everyone offers another helpful tool to defeat the virus.

He said: "Testing is vital as it helps us to identify, track down and control any remaining pockets of the virus and prevent it spreading into the wider community.

"I would urge anyone that is out and about to take these tests twice weekly and to protect your family, friends and the community.

"Even if you have already had your first vaccination, please do go for regular testing as it is still not clear whether you can carry the virus and transmit it to others."

People with any symptoms of COVID-19 should immediately self-isolate and book a test at Newclose County Cricket Ground by calling 119 or via the government website.
