Isle of Wight firefighters are at the former Harcourt Sands holiday park this morning (Monday).

Clouds of thick black smoke were photographed from as far away as Appley earlier.

Crews from Ryde and Sandown are on the scene dealing with the incident.

A water carrier from Freshwater has also been called out.

The initial call was to a fire in the open on the derelict site near Puckpool.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue has told the County Press that it is a builders' burn, but firefighters are bringing it under control.

A passer-by told the County Press: "The smoke really was thick, black and probably very acrid – I was some way away.

"There was very obvious concerns about the material being burnt."

UPDATE 1.40pm:

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said the fire involved foam and aluminium panels.

Fire crews stood down at 12.14pm.
