Isle of Wight school children return to the classroom from today (Monday) - in stage one of the Prime Minister's roadmap out of lockdown.

For returning secondary pupils, a programme of voluntary Covid-19 testing is getting underway.

Schools are phasing in the tests, for those due back in the classroom, over the next week.

Students will be tested twice a week, with the first three tests carried out at school, before moving to twice-weekly home testing.

Primary school children will not be tested regularly, said the government, due to low levels of transmission in younger aged groups.

Many secondary school pupils will also be expected to wear masks - even in their lessons.

The government has announced that all households with children of school age will be able to get two rapid Covid-19 tests per person, per week.

That includes those with primary and secondary school and college age children, as well as childcare and support bubbles.

Some areas have collection sites, where lateral flow tests can be collected - but there are none on the Isle of Wight.

Instead, Island parents and carers can order tests via an online ordering service. CLICK HERE to do that.

Some university students are also due back - if they study subjects that cannot be learned remotely.

Throughout lockdown, schools have only been open for vulnerable children and those of keyworkers.

All others have been getting their lessons online.
