An Isle of Wight man has told the County Press how he saw a 'fireball' light up the sky over the Island on Sunday night.

Peter Newton, who lives on Staplers Road, Newport, called us to say he had spotted "a very strange sight in the sky. Like a fireball going northeast," just before 10pm on February 28.

Now, scientists have confirmed that it is likely to have been a small piece of an asteroid entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

The meteor's arrival sent a sonic boom across southern England, according to scientists from the UK Fireball Alliance (UKFall), which is led by staff at the Natural History Museum.

It was seen from Ireland to the Netherlands and has become the most-reported ever.

Across the UK, many video doorbell and security cameras captured the astronomical event.
