IT'S official....There will be no more football this season for Isle of Wight senior sides, Cowes, East Cowes Vics and Newport.

Covid-19 restrictions have forced an early end to the season, it has been confirmed.

The Island League is now poised to make an announcement, after a statement last night about the Wessex League.

Cowes play in the Premier Division of the Sydenham's Wessex League.

East Cowes Vics and Newport and have been without games for several months, as the Covid-19 pandemic led to cancellation of all sport, including Island football.

In brighter news, for Island League clubs, the Saturday League is set to announce a restart, pending FA guidance and a vote on options on where the season goes from here.

The FA said the 2020-21 grassroots season has been extended until the end of June to provide additional flexibility and time for leagues to complete their fixtures.

IW Divisional Football Association chairman, Geoff Ruck, was upbeat about the prospect of a resumption.

“We’re pleased we can once again look forward to football returning on the Island before too long,” he said.
