Paul Robinson’s two Morris Minors are part of the family — so much so that his two grown-up daughters, Sophie and Jocelyn, have laid claim to one each when he dies.

One of the cars — named Gemma after the actress Gemma Craven — was the vehicle of choice for Jocelyn’s wedding in 2019.

Paul, from Ryde, has a long-standing love of Morris Minors. He explained: “I’d had a passion for Morris Minors and had owned one for three months when Gemma appeared one Saturday in October 1977 on the forecourt of Aedy’s Garage at Wootton Bridge. She was priced at £350 and it was love at first sight!

“Several other Morris Minors have followed plus a brief foray into a Harley Davidson. The most notable Morris to follow was Reggie — a convertible — whom I bought from a friend in February 2000.”

Gemma is a 1954 four-door Series II Morris Minor with an 803cc A series engine, while Reggie is a 1968 Morris Minor 1000 convertible.

They have virtually matching number-plates too and Paul believes the chances of owning two cars of the same type with such close registration numbers are quite slim.

Reggie had a total makeover and was modified to become a convertible about ten years ago.

Originally Paul was going to transfer the number-plate to a convertible, but cries of heresy were heard from the IW Morris Minor Owners’ Club.

He said: “It seems transferring registration numbers is a cardinal sin, but the structural and body changes to a saloon was okay!”

Paul said both cars are similar to Trigger’s broom, in that they have received a lot of attention over the years.

“Gemma was in as new condition on 1977 when I first saw her, but suffered as she was used every day for many years.

“Barry Price, who has MoT’d her many times, remembers being on board when she was delivered to Fowler’s of Newport from Oxford. She had a knocking noise which turned out to be a hammer left inside the door!”

Paul has taken both cars on substantial road trips in the past — Gemma has been to the French Riviera twice in the early 1980s, plus a few tours around England and a trip to Scotland, while Reggie went to Megadais in France three years ago.

Both cars also regularly attend the annual IW Morris Minor rally — sometimes together — and occasionally the national Morris Minor rally, where Gemma was the best Series II in 2005.
