A SERIOUS car crash involving two casualties led to the closure of a main Isle of Wight road late last night (Saturday).

The main road at Hale Common, from Watery Lane to Branstone Cross, was closed by police, and the air ambulance flew in to assist the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

Two casualties were extricated from a vehicle by firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Crews attended from Sandown, Shanklin and Newport, along with an officer.

One casualty was taken by ambulance to St Mary's Hospital in Newport.

The other was flown by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance helicopter to Southampton General.

The incident happened at around 10.23pm and the fire service stop call came in at 11.36pm.

The road has now been re-opened.

Update: An appeal for witnesses has been launched by police.

Police said the car crashed into a tree, and they would like to speak to anyone with any information.
