FIREFIGHTERS had to force their way into a woman's flat on behalf of the Isle of Ambulance Service following a report of concern for her welfare this morning (Saturday).

Ambulance control received a call at 8.25am from a friend of the woman, who lives alone, saying she was very worried about her.

Paramedics were unable to gain access to the property in Cross Street, Ryde, and called the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for help.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Using an extension ladder, firefighters from Ryde gained access to the communal area of the flats above the My Dentist surgery and broke down the door to the woman's flat.

An Ambulance Service spokesman, based in Newport, said there had been a problem transporting the woman, but paramedics were eventually satisfied she did not need to be taken to St Mary's Hospital.

Police closed the road, which links George Street and Union Street, during the operation, which ended at 9.39am, with the road reopening to traffic shortly afterwards.
