AN ISLE of Wight veterinary surgery has warned there may be palm oil washed up on Island beaches.

Green Roberts and Butler Veterinary Surgeons (The Carisbrooke Vets) said they have had dogs brought in after visiting Shanklin and Lake beaches.

Palm oil is very toxic to dogs and vets may need to make them be sick, to rid the substance from their body.

A statement from the vets said: "There seems to have been palm oil washed up on the beaches. We have had patients from Shanklin and Lake beaches (Friday), so the south east coast may be most affected.

"This can look like small flecks or large white lumps. It is toxic when eaten by dogs.

"If you think your dog may have eaten palm oil, please call your vets as soon as possible as they may need to be made to vomit."
