THE IW Met Service has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice — and it says up to one centimetre of snow could fall.

The warning is active from 1am tomorrow morning (Thursday) until 9am. Cold weather is expected to last until at least Friday.

Jamie Russell for the service said: "During the early hours of tomorrow morning, an area of snow is likely to move up from the English channel.

"The exact positioning and the eastward extent of the snow is highly uncertain, so we have issued a precautionary warning for the early hours of the morning.

"Locally, up to 1cm of snow could fall with the highest risk in the far west and south of the Island.

"Areas further north are more likely to see just a few flurries, much like we have experienced over the last 48 hours.

"Icy conditions are also likely, especially where any snow falls.

"Temperatures as low as -4C are possible at first in some parts but this will rise above freezing toward dawn.

"Not everywhere will see the snow falling and there is also a reasonable chance that the heaviest snow could miss the Island to the west.

"Most of the snow should have melted by the time we move into the daylight hours.

"Cold weather is now expected until at least Friday, and possibly beyond.

"Night time temperatures will drop to a low of -3C in places with daytime temperatures only reaching slightly above freezing in some parts leading to a mean temperature of below freezing and a wind chill (feel) temperature of many degrees below freezing throughout the period.

"Occasional flurries of snow will also be likely at times through the week with a very light dusting possible in places."
