COVID failed to stop thousands of pounds being raised by Terry and Sue Ramplin at their Long Lane home — when they switched their Christmas lights on for the 21st time.

The couple raised £3458.00.

Different charities are supported each year, and this year Terry kept it very local, choosing two good causes geographically close to his home.

Cheques for £1,729 were presented to John Goodenough for Care in the Garden and Don Walser for the Isle of Wight Monkey Haven.

The lights were switched on for the 21st year on December 5.

There were some changes due to Covid — they couldn't advertise in advance so as not to attract too big a crowd, and they had to introduce several Covid-secure measures.

But they still built their display in its usual style, featuring thousands of light and traditional scenes including a nativity, reindeers, Santa and a Christmas tree.

Terry, 70, said: "Both charities were over the moon and said the money will be a big help.

"The lights were really well supported and we had good weather, it was brilliant.

"All I ask is that people give a donation as they walk through the gate, so thank you to all those who supported us.

"I would also like to thank StageGear, who provided the snow machine, Island Marquees as I couldn't put it on without them, Sydenhams, who donated money, ADL Scaffold who helped with the build, and Will Groves of Combley Farm who gave us a Christmas tree.

"I would like to do at least one more big Christmas display if my health stays with me. I have had my Covid injection and I am hoping everything will get back to normal later this year."
