From Anne Grant, Fareham:

The interesting and informative letter from Roger Bunney (CP 29-01-21), about the Second World War Ventnor ‘Y station’ on Rew Down, brought back memories of a letter I received in March 2015 from Mrs Rose Davies of Shrewsbury.

Rose, who was 98 when she wrote to me, shared her memories of being stationed on the Island during the Second World War.

Rose said: “I joined up and went through training on the mainland, to use radar. I was then posted to Ventnor in July 1943.

"I was working on very new equipment which tracked shipping in the area, including across the English Channel on D-Day on June 6, 1944.

There were already radar operators based at Ventnor but that was for tracking aircraft.

We had very little contact with them.

What I can tell you is that we all found the residents of Ventnor to be very kind people.

We were often invited in for a cup of tea with them and several of us attended the local church when we were off duty.”
