From Bob Blezzard, Sandown:

I read with interest the announcement of the first five candidates standing for “Our Island” at the forthcoming Isle of Wight Council election.

Mr Warren will be apparently be standing in Ventnor West. Unfortunately there will be no such county electoral division following the local boundary review.

I suspect he means Ventnor and St Lawrence.

If we have such a lack of attention to detail in a major announcement by this fledgling party it doesn’t bode well for the future.

Now I turn to the intrepid Mr Bacon, who wants to fundamentally change the way the council makes decisions.

He needs to be reminded of the Island Independent manifesto “Framework for Change” in 2013 which promised to ditch the undemocratic cabinet system and replace it with a committee system allowing all members to be involved in the decision-making process. .

In 2014 when the matter came before council I proposed such a change which was then opposed by Jonathan and other members of the Island Independent group who opted to make some minor cosmetic changes and retain the cabinet simply renaming it an executive.

When Jonathan became council leader he headed up a dysfunctional, officer-reliant administration, throwing in the towel when the going got tough and the administration imploded leaving others to pick up the pieces.

Let me make it clear, I am no fan of the current administration which looks tired and short of vision. There needs to be change, but experience tells me that Mr Bacon will not provide the answer.
