ANOTHER person has died on the Isle of Wight after testing positive for Covid-19.

The latest death — on Sunday, January 17 — means 89 Islanders have now died in hospital after a positive coronavirus test.

Six had been recorded yesterday (Monday). New NHS England figures take the Isle of Wight's total in January alone to 33 — the most of any month.

A further 50 Islanders have died in care homes, after two more fatalities were recorded earlier today (Tuesday).

In the community, four Islanders have died at home, or in a hospice.

It brings the Island's cumulative death toll to 143.

The average rate of positive cases is going down, according to the government's interactive map, though our rate per 100,000 people remains above average for the country.

We are warned that the continued impact of Covid-19 will continue to be felt at St Mary's Hospital in Newport, over the 'coming weeks and days'.
