Latest update shows promising trend in Isle of Wight Covid cases

Today's update takes the month's cases to 3,548 — with almost ten months of previous testing having yielded 1,679 cases.

According to figures published by Public Health England, for the second successive day, 111 new cases have been reported.

The cumulative total for the Isle of Wight now stands at 5,227.

Yesterday (Saturday), 111 positive cases of the virus were also recorded, with Friday's 235 new cases taking the Island total beyond 5,000.

The graph below shows January's daily Covid updates, with the numbers seemingly dropping during the third lockdown, although they remain a huge leap from the single figure updates recorded less than a month ago.

The highest daily increase since records began was on Sunday, January 3 — when 459 new cases were added.

The seven-day case rate per 100,000 for the Island, though five days behind, has dropped significantly from 1,036.2 to 895.1 ­— and from 9th to 16th highest in the country according to the Government's interactive map.

Ninety per cent of Covid cases on the Isle of Wight are now through the new strain of the virus.

The variant, which started in Kent and has worked its way across the South, has seen coronavirus levels rocket, moving it from one of the safest areas to having one of the highest case rates in the UK in just a few days.

As of Tuesday, January 12, there were 66 Covid patients - with 11 on ventilators - a rise, compared to the previous week.

The hospital's ICU is one of the smallest in the country and work has been carried out to extend the number of beds from six - with an aim to create 24.
