YARMOUTH RNLI was called to assist a motor boat in difficulty this evening (Friday).

At 5.41pm, Yarmouth’s Severn class all weather lifeboat was tasked to a 34-foot motor yacht with a loss of all power.

Yarmouth RNLI’s volunteer crew headed west out of the Solent on their first shout of 2021 to locate the motor cruiser.

Information from the coastguard identified it as being one mile south of The Needles with one person reported to be on board.

On scene, Yarmouth RNLI found the boat had managed to secure an anchor while awaiting help.

A spokesperson for Yarmouth RNLI said: "The loss of all battery power meant the vessel had no navigation lights.

"With nightfall and decreasing temperatures, this was becoming an increasingly dangerous situation for the yacht."

As the conditions were calm, the RNLI crew were able to secure a tow line without having to go onboard the cruiser.

On arrival back in Yarmouth, the RNLI established an alongside tow in order to safely take the motor yacht into the harbour, where they were met by local coastguard teams to be given appropriate safety advice.

Yarmouth Lifeboat returned to her berth and was ready for service at 7.40pm.
